Unity Installation — The Beginning

So you have read a ton about being a game developer, you’re ready to get started and decided to begin with Unity. Frankly, an amazing place to start. First things first. Head over to unity.com (yep, great domain name grab) and get started. Once you find the proper download for your computer, you’ll be taken to Unity Hub.

Like the name suggests, Unity Hub is the central point where you will be able to access all your projects, some Unity tutorials, and your installs. Changes are constantly being made to Unity and there are various versions available to the public at any given time. Many times the latest versions are betas for users to try and give feedback on. As of this writing, I believe the latest is 2020.3. When you install your first version, I would suggest using the latest, which is also listed under “Recommended Release.”

So close now! Time to make a new project. In the projects tab you’re going to click the big shiny ‘NEW’ in the top right. You should see your latest install show up and others if you downloaded multiple. After that, it is simply naming your project, choosing a template, and a place local place for it to save. For now, I wouldn’t worry about anything besides your first project being 2D or 3D and that is for you to decide.

There it is! That bright and blank Unity screen. I will not be putting a picture of it here, so as not to spoil it. If you continue down the Unity Developer Journey for some time, you will see this image a lot and it will eventually become a great comfort and a sign of new beginnings. Congratulations, this step is a big one.
