Unity Development — Level Design
We have seen a number of interesting techniques and designs over this Unity Jounrey. Over the last couple of weeks, it has mostly been in a side-scrolling scenario, but most could still be taken into the 3D realm. Putting some of this all together to make something cohesive is what level design is all about.
Collectables, whether sprites or 3D models are easily something that can be placed all over to encourage the player to pick them up. Maybe make them go into some off path areas to find more.
With an elevator, you can create height in your level. Maybe even add some optional elevators so that you have multiple paths in higher or lower areas. Great possibilities from there.
Horizontal moving platforms do not create the same height effect as elevators, but they can also be used to connect two areas that are possibly different in atmosphere. They also add a bit of a challenge when moving between them.
Some built in platforms at just the perfect distance for ledge grabs adds to excitement and some challenge for the levels as well.
Put all this together and you have the potential for a diverse and fun level on your hands. Play around and test things out. Before you know it, you could create something that people remember the layout of forever.
